This calendar presents knitting patterns offered in a flip-over style box, sure to keep the knitter casting-on all year long.

The 2009 Knitting Calendar Pattern-a-Day™ features patterns to knit ranging from easy to advanced skill levels. More complex patterns are spread out over two or more “days” in this calendar.

Knitting Calendar Format

The calendar comes in a cardboard box that flips open and over to support itself. This is a patented style of calendar stands called the Easy Fold-a-Round™. Daily pages are taken out from the front of the box and inserted in the back. If a pattern catches the knitter’s fancy she can easily remove the page or pages and return it later for safekeeping.

Types of Knitting Patterns Offered

The deck starts out with an intermediate pattern for a rainbow soap sack designed by Sue Higgins. For the last two days of December 2009 the pattern is for a holiday hat for a child designed by Dana Lorz – this pattern is rated for beginner skill level.

Some very clever patterns jump out of this book such as:

  • Sushi rolls to knit
  • A pirate hat featuring skull and cross bone designs
  • A book mark to crochet
  • Clothing for toys – a teddy bear sweater
  • Baby clothes from hats and booties to hoodies and blankets
  • Items to knit for the bath – a couple of bath mats and other accessories
  • A yoga mat bag with handle
  • Cute clothes for dogs
  • A plethora of sock patterns for both men and women
  • The Lola stuffed pig pattern from Rebecca Hatcher for Schaefer Yarn
  • A memory flash drive cover in the shape of a Llama

Pros and Cons of the 2009 Knitting Calendar

The clear advantage with this calendar is that it is setup to offer inspiration for knitters of various skill levels. It is compact in size, easily fitting on a desk or workstation and makes a great gift for someone who knits.

While there are many unique patterns offered in the 2009 Knitting Calendar there are an equal number of free patterns offered by large yarn manufacturers. Since these patterns can be obtained complimentary through the manufacturers’ websites it may disappoint some.

If the yarn crafter is not put off by wide-distributed patterns from the yarn companies, this calendar can remain a very inspiring nudge to knit throughout the year. Many patterns are seasonally appropriate and some are simply too clever and unique to pass by. Overall the calendar is an attractive setup and comes at a price one would expect to pay for a book or calendar.
