Knit a cell phone cover and a matching purse. Each of these patterns takes less than a skein of yarn.

Among many things, two fashion facts hold true: Cell phones need to be protected, and one can never have too many purses. These two patterns fulfill each of these wishes. Make one or both, for yourself or for others. They each take less than a skein of yarn, so go ahead and splurge on that luxurious skein of yarn you’ve been admiring for so long.

Cell Phone Cover Instructions

  • One skein of yarn will make 3 or 4 covers.
  • Measurements: Approximately 2.5” (6.5 cm) wide and 4” (10 m) tall with 6” (15 cm) strap (buttoned)
  • Gauge: 17 stitches = 4” (10 cm) in stockinette stitch
  • Supplies
  • Yarn: Any kind of worsted weight yarn.
  • Needles: US 8 (5 mm) straight needles
  • Other: One ½” (1.3 cm) button, 5” (12.5 cm) length of grosgrain ribbon, 3/8” (1 cm) wide

Pattern

Cell Phone Case

  • Cast on 24 stitches.
  • Work in stockinette stitch until piece measures 4” or desired height (depending on size of cell phone), ending with a wrong-side row.

Strap

Continue right on from carrier to strap.

  • Next Row: Bind off 10 stitches, knit to end of row.
  • Next Row: Bind off 10 stitches purlwise, purl to end of row.
  • Work remaining 4 stitches in stockinette stitch (on right-side rows, slip the first stitch purlwise; on wrong-side rows, slip the first stitch knitwise) until strap measures 6” or desired length to buttonhole.

Buttonhole

  • Row 1: K1, K2tog, yo, K1.
  • Work 3 rows in stockinette stitch. Bind off.

Finishing

Fold carrier in half and sew the side and bottom seams. Whipstitch ribbon to the inside of the strap, from top of carrier to buttonhole. Sew on button. Weave in ends.

Fuzzy Button Bag Instructions

  • Measurements: Approximately 9” (23 cm) wide and 7” (18 cm) tall
  • Yarn: Worsted Weight Novelty Yarn of Choice
  • Needles: US 8, 9, or 10 (5, 5.5, or 6 mm) straight needles and crochet hook size E/4 (3.5 mm) or F/5 (4.0 mm), based on desired gauge.
  • Other supplies: 8 yds regular yarn in similar color for seaming and drawstring; 1 jumbo button with four holes

The Bag

  • Cast on 35 stitches.
  • Knit every row until piece is approximately twice as long as it is wide.
  • Bind off.

The Drawstrings (Make 2)

  • With crochet hook and plain yarn, chain 100.
  • Beginning in second chain from hook, slip stitch in each chain back to the beginning.
  • Fasten off.

Finishing

Fold bag in half and sew side seams with plain yarn. Attach one end of one drawstring to a safety pin. Beginning at center front top of bag, weave drawstring around top edge in and out of knitting at 1” intervals spaced evenly around, exiting the same hole you started in. Do the same with the second drawstring, but begin at center back.
