Easy to Make Hand Knitted Christmas Decorations
Christmas is the perfect excuse to get creative, whether it is knitting, crotchet, card and glitter, making Christmas cards, making clay novelties, or cake-making, have fun. Hand-made decorations always add a touch of character to a room.
What is Needed to Make a Mini Stocking
- Two different colours of double knitting or 4 ply wool
- 3mm knitting needles
How to Knit a Mini Christmas Stocking
Using needles and colour A cast on 25 stitches
Knit 5 rows
Rows 6 and 7 - using colour B knit 1 row then purl 1 row
Rows 8 and 9 – using colour A knit 1 row then purl 1 row
Rows 10 and 11 – using colour B knit 1 row then purl 1 row
Rows 12 and 13 – using colour A knit 1 row then purl 1 row
Rows 14 and 15 – using colour B knit 1 row then purl 1 row
Rows 16 and 17 – using colour A knit 1 row then purl 1 row
Rows 18 and 19 – using colour B knit 1 row then purl 1 row
Shape heel as follows:
Row 20 - using colour A knit 7 then turn work
Row 21 - slip 1, purl 6
Repeat rows 20 and 21 three times more
Row 28 – knit 3, knit 2 together through the back, knit 1, leave 1 stitch on needle and turn
Row 29 – slip 1, purl 4
Row 30 – knit 2, knit 2 together through the back, leaving 2 stitches on needle turn
Row 31 – slip 1, purl 2
Row 32 – knit 2, knit 2 together through the back, knit 1, then turn
Row 33 – slip 1, purl 3
Slide all stitches onto other needle, so that the wrong side of the work is facing
Row 34 – using colour A purl 7
Row 35 – slip 1, knit 6
Repeat rows 34 and 35 three times more
Row 42 – purl 3, purl 2 together, purl 1, leave 1 stitch on needle and turn
Row 43 – slip 1, knit 4
Row 44 – purl 2, purl 2 together, leaving 2 stitches on needle turn
Row 45 – slip 1, knit 2
Row 46 – purl 2, purl 2 together, purl 1, turn
Row 47 – slip 1 knit 3
Slide stitches onto other needle, so that right side of work is facing
Row 48 – using colour B knit across 4 stitches, pick up 5 stitches from inside of heel, knit across main part of stocking, pick up 5 stitches from inside of heel, knit last 4 stitches
Row 49 – purl
Row 50 – using colour A knit 8, knit 2 together, knit 9, knit 2 together through the back, knit 8
Row 51 – purl 7, purl 2 together through the back, purl 9, purl 2 together, purl 7
Row 52 – using colour B knit 6, knit 2 together, knit 9, knit 2 together through the back, knit 6
Row 53 – purl
Rows 54 and 55 – using colour A knit 1 row, then purl 1 row
Rows 56 and 57 – using colour B knit 1 row, then purl 1 row
Rows 58 and 59 – using colour A knit 1 row, then purl 1 row
Rows 60 and 61 – using colour B knit 1 row, then purl 1 row
Rows 62 and 63 – using colour A knit 1 row, then purl 1 row
Keep using colour A from here onwards
Row 64 – knit 3, knit 2 together through the back, knit 4, knit 2 together, knit 1, knit 2 together through the back, knit 4, knit 2 together, knit 3
Row 65 - purl
Row 66 – knit 3, knit 2 together through the back, knit 2, knit 2 together, knit 1, knit 2 together through the back, knit 2, knit 2 together, knit 3
Row 67 – purl
Break off the wool and thread through remaining stitches. Pull tightly and tie off. Turn work inside-out, sew up side edge using either colour A or B, and turn work the correct way around. Attach an elasticated cord or loop of plaited wool to inside of mini Christmas stocking for hanging on Christmas tree.
Be creative and make homemade Christmas decorations. They are more economical than buying ready-made ones, and they will look much better too.
